It turns out eAccelerator by stripping comments, will cause an error with one of several newer features in PHP. While I've seen the issue requesting the option to add a compile time flag to disable it, it seems like it would make more sense to have it disabled by default (or not be part of the functionality period?) unless there was a strong argument that it remain.

There are several frameworks that use the Class metadata feature and some that strictly rely on it.
