From @tclavelle (moving to this issues page Tyler):

Hey @jafflerbach @bbest @jules32

I just got back from a 3 day summit at Google learning about their Google Earth Engine. It probably goes without saying that Google is doing some pretty amazing stuff. I'd be happy to run a eco-data-science training to share what I learned.

Let me know what you think!

Hi @tclavelle -

This would be fantastic, when would you like to do this? I'm eager to learn more about Google Earth Engine and how it could help us with our work. Summer means we likely won't have a big group but we can send out a poll to see what days work best. If you'd like to create a poll or throw out some options in this thread that'd be great.

Thanks for sharing what you learned!

That would be great! For some of us that are not in SB over the summer, could we skype in or something like that?

Great, sounds like a plan. I'll be on the east coast for a few weddings
until after the July 4th holiday, so maybe we can find a time in early
July. I'll take a look at my schedule and send out a poll soon.

Cheers,
Tyler

There are a few of us in the Geography Department who are also very
interested!

Hey @tclavelle - any interest in (re)starting up eco-data-science with a Google Earth Engine session sometime in the next few weeks??

Yes, would love to hear more about this!

Since getting a quick taste from Tyler, I played with the JavaScript code
console (Python also available) using the documentation
https://developers.google.com/earth-engine/ and materials from the Earth
Engine User Summit 2016
http://earthenginesummit2016.earthoutreach.org/training-materials that
some of you attended - really easy to use, but the dataset catalog seems
limited for marine (like only SST
https://explorer.earthengine.google.com/#detail/NOAA%2FAVHRR_Pathfinder_V52_L3
is
AVHRR to 2012).

There are some pretty sweet apps using Earth Engine that perform real-time
calculation of global high density time-series satellite data:
Climate Engine http://ClimateEngine.org, Map of Life

This session will be on October 17 at Bren. Still waiting on rooms and times then I'll send out an update to the larger eco data science group.

It might be a bit late for today's session, but just a reminder that you need to sign up to Earth Engine in order to access all of the features: https://earthengine.google.com/signup/
