    Also rearranged some stuff to make responsibilities more sensible.
    Removed the useless "input layer", since MapLayer is already a brainy
    container and thus can just deal with input itself.  Letting layers
    handle their own input makes modes much easier to work with anyway.

    Rearrange code from hamfisted MVC to a natural arrangement that ended up
    being kinda like MVC anyway.  C'est la vie.
