In order to update any log levels, the ES node must be restarted. It'd be great if the changes could be picked up at runtime either through a mechanism similar to log4j's configureAndWatch or via REST command to reload the logging settings.

The key benefit of this, is that it will allow users to capture errors that disappear with a node restart.

Thanks!

Agreed, that would be nice. I was thinking of tacking this maybe a bit differently, and expose a cluster wide "update_logging" API. What do you think?

This feature is implemented using the cluster update settings API.
