Expected Behavior

GPU behaves normally, no errors logged.

Actual Behavior

After a few minutes upon starting the App, the following message logs:

the application doesn't crash directly but it seems as though hardware acceleration is disabled anf it quietly fallsback to software rendering, which leads to worse performance / dropped frames.

Did some intense Google search and found a lot of similar errors throughout the Web, all relating back to Chromium. This error doesn't appear in older version of Electron but affects all recent ones.

It may have also todo with an Nvidia driver, since I recently updated that to the latest version.

Seems related, but has nothing to do with Unicode characters.

Since the bug seems to occur at various places across the web, but never seem to get resolved,

it would be good do know more about the part of Chromium that throws that error and possible causes.

Are there any members of the electron team proficient in the Chromium src code around that specific part?

If so, maybe we can find the root cause with joint effort.

EDIT: My theory so far is that it has to do with the GPU sandboxing behaviour and Chromiums recent effort for passthrough, which isn't fully implemented yet. Perhaps some GPU call / behaviour leads to it "detecting" a sandbox breach and shuts down the GPU. Since the passthrough / angle stuff is recent, it may explain why it only affects recent versions. That's all just speculations though. Disabling Sandboxing per flag does absolutely nothing and the error still appears around 1-2 minutes after app launch.

EDIT2: Definitely no issues even with the latest versions of 13x. Whatever the cause, must have been introduced at 14 or 15, either in the Chromium source or Electron source

I get this error, although my app continues to function and render perfectly fine, I am wondering if this is forcing it to CPU render the window instead of GPU? Testing on a dell with both integrated and discrete graphics, the error doesn't seem to do anything, although I'm not doing any GL rendering in the app. Not sure what passthrough means in this context.

Yeah I think you're right. App works fine, but performance for heavy GPU affects (CSS Shadows, transforms, filters etc) is hugely degraded and lots of dropped frames etc (same if you did WebGL directly).

Would probably also be good to share software & hardware stack for where the error occurs.

Mine is Windows 10, Nvidia GTX 1050 - error occurs both with latest gaming and studio driver

Can you paste the full logs here? It looks like GL is already disabled by the time that log message shows up.

To collect full logs from all processes, run Electron with --enable-logging --log-file=electron.txt and attach the resulting file.

interestingly, when I add those options to the electron command, electron crashes. must be that it sets up some kind of stricter exception handling when logging is enabled? anyhow, this is what the log file shows:

Ok prevented the crash, but unfortunately nothing appears in the log file other than what already shows in the developer view console, which is just:

Rendering seems much slower than normal browser, rather laggy coz possibly done with CPU instead of GPU.

I get the same message for all my electron applications.
Usually it appears after a few seconds. Sometimes after a long time again.
However it does not affect the rendering in any way. The task manager says the hardware resources (CPU and GPU) are used exactly the same amount as before. You can use the app without any constraints. I am able to use WebGL.

I do not know if this is related to the bug, but app.commandLine.appendSwitch('force_high_performance_gpu'); does not work, only the integrated graphics card (default) is used.
