I have 2 external Dell displays an a notebook with this arrangement.

When i disconnect the displays, use the notebook without them, close it and open it the next day at work with the 2 displays connected again, all windows are messed up and some are outside of the display space!

screen2

This happens right now with the programs:

  • BOINC Manager
  • KeePass2
  • KeePassXC (AppImage version)
  • Remmina

Workaround: Close the apps. They open again in the center of a random screen and sometimes on the edge.

It is really bad for me since BOINC stops calculating when closed and KeePass* needs to have the password typed in again.

Please provide an option in the dock context menu to "center window on screen" until you have fixed this issue!

I can reproduce this issue with 2 notebooks. I dumped the Macbook Pro because of too many issues with elementary OS and have a Dell now.

elementary OS 0.4.1 Loki
Kernel: Linux 4.10.0-32-generic
on Dell Latitude E5470 (Intel i5, 8 GB RAM)

Software: elementary OS 0.4 Loki with HWE Stack
Hardware: MacBook Pro 10.2 from October 2012

New level of brokenness: The Workaround don't work for Terminal.

Even if i close the Terminal, new windows open out of screen space.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. have a Terminal window on the Notebook screen
  2. connect the Dell Notebook to the docking station with 2 external displays connected
  3. windows are arranged randomly, some at the bottom right outside of screenspace (including Terminal)

See this video: https://youtu.be/e6D7dMf6Mho

(not sure if you can reproduce it with other hardware)

I changed the Layout to be able to use the Terminal again.

But now the windows are on the left out of screen space after suspend.

I also get incorrect window placement using 5.0 when my leftmost monitor is not my primary and does not share a top edge boundary with my primary. The window placement is even worse when the leftmost pixel and upper most pixel is in a large dead area.

The default window placement seems to prefer the left most display, not the primary display.

Reproducing with any app in 5.1.3 + Mutter

Workaround that works fairly well:

  1. Switch to the app whose window is out of the screen with ALT + TAB
  2. press META + Up Arrow, which will maximize to the "nearest screen".
  3. Drag the window down with the mouse to the screen.
