I knew, when I wrote previously on this, that I had seen the expression "Ellington Giants" in a similar context. I have just 'run it to earth'.
Fremeaux et Associes released a cd under Hodges' name concerning the Paris session in March 1961. Ellington was 'tied up' finishing off work on the film "Paris Blues" and " Hodges and his 'Ellington Giants' (including Nance, Brown & Carney) "stopped by Stockholm, Helsinki .... Paris and finally Berlin." On the penultimate page of the cd's notes a listing of the pieces played in Paris is headed "Johnny Hodges & the Duke Ellington Giants...."
Of course, that doesn't prove anything by itself but it does suggest that the "Ellington Giants" tag may well have been used by Ellington & others [Granz perhaps] well before the San Remo date.
Pointed out by Ron Malings. Should be "DUKE ELLINGTON'S GIANTS GROUP". You can hear him say "Giants" here https://pastdaily.com/2018/05/06/duke-ellington-san-remo-festival-1964-past-daily-downbeat/. Ideally this link should also be added.
