I guess maybe this is the expected behavior (i.e. "the JS on the other side of the port is part of the Program. If it crashes, the Program crashes") but that's not how I understood them to be.

Confirmed #541 is still an issue. You no longer get the "notify message has been called synchronously" error, just the original error and then it stops updating.
Updated example at https://github.com/robertjlooby/elm-port-error to Elm 0.17
