FIXED: Liquid syntax warnings that would be displayed under certain circumstances when initiating a local running instance.
IMPROVED: Per-category Atom feeds. A great way to separate topics or keep linked-list/microblog style posts out of a feed. There is an example file called
announcements.xml which can be changed in order to fit your needs.
IMPROVED: Ordinal, rather than cardinal display of dates is now the default.
IMPROVED: Home and per-post pagination are now styled and function identically.
ADDED: Rich link previews! Replace assets/iMessage.png with the image of your choice and whenever a link to your website is shared using iMessage for iOS/macOS/watchOS it will be shared as a rich link with the image you chose rather than just displaying the fav icon. This feature can also be extended to show a specific image per post/page instead.
Fixed: When a date last modified is present for a post the category is now listed next to the original publish date when viewing an individual post.
IMPROVED: Updated the README to detail all of the features available in Noir.
IMPROVED: Changed the favicon so that it looks best with both light and dark modes.
IMPROVED: Refined the presentation of the masthead, footer and last modified date in order to provide a consistent design aesthetic between desktop and mobile.
FIXED: Line spacing issues that arose on pagination if an external link was declared.
IMPROVED: Further refined the look of code blocks by making the background slightly lighter, text slightly larger,
rounding the corners more drastically and including a box shadow when the light color scheme is active.
IMPROVED: When viewing the permalink for a post that points to an external URL the words
'External Link' replace the word 'Permalink' to further signify that it is a linked post.
ADDED: Navigation! A navigation element underneath the masthead of the site which I decided to structure using
<li> rather than link weight in
ADDED: Archive page! Organized with monthly grouping in reverse chronological order.
ADDED: Built-in HTML/CSS compression (minification). No need to re-invent the wheel, this feature
was implemented perfectly (without using a plugin!) by Anatol Broder.
ADDED: Support for categories! A category is intended to be singular, as it should be. The categories page is sorted
alphabetically and the posts within each category are sorted in reverse chronological order.
ADDED: Support for tags! Tags are intended to be plural if necessary. Tags are displayed at the bottom of each post
whether viewing paginated posts or a single post. The tags page is sorted alphabetically but tags listed on posts are
in the order which they are added in front matter to allow for custom sorting.
COMING SOON: Per-post author bio.
COMING SOON: A true black dark mode toggle for OLED displays.
I have been steadily working on Noir the past three weeks and still have quite a bit I want to accomplish. Here is what has changed so far in this latest release:
FIXED: component sizing is now consistent throughout the entire theme
FIXED: smart quotes will now properly display on paginated blog posts
FIXED: line spacing issues caused by inline footnote references
FIXED: alignment and white space issues with code blocks
FIXED: the overall cohesiveness of the theme's style
IMPROVED: the ability for novice programmers to very quickly change the entire
color scheme of the theme for light and dark modes.
IMPROVED: cleaned up various loose ends to improve Jekyll build time
IMPROVED: external links now open in a new tab/window
IMPROVED: the styling of inline footnote references
IMPROVED: the styling of syntax highlighting
IMPROVED: the presentation of code blocks
IMPROVED: increased the number of default message boxes that are defined and styled them with inspiration from the original rainbow Apple logo
ADDED: button labels! which I am using right now to present the changes
in this update.
ADDED: created a ::before element to headers, styled to mimic many popular Markdown editors and which can be easily customized by you
ADDED: linked style posts! Clicking the title of the post takes the visitor to
the source being linked to, adds an arrow at the end of the post title to indicate
that it is an external link and also adds a permalink underneath the post date so
that you are still able to direct visitors to your site first if desired.
To create a link post you simply add an additional line to the post front matter
with the external link source:
ADDED: code blocks now display the language name (^ see it?)
ADDED: per post navigation in the form of 'previous' and 'next' links, found at
the bottom of post content
span classes for message boxes: warning, info, success and danger have all been depricated in the move to additional, newer ones
COMING SOON: per-post author bio
COMING SOON: built-in category and tags support
COMING SOON: built-in html/css compression (minification)
COMING SOON: built-in navigation area for pages/categories/tags/links
This theme is a constant work in progress. If you have any issues, questions or suggestions please send them my way...and thank you for your interest in Noir!
