put directory from Windows to Ubuntu results in backslashes

I'm running fabfile from Windows box. When using put('chef', '/home/someuser/chef') directories are not created and backslashes become part of the filename.

For example, chef/solo.rb becomes a file named chef\solo.rb. That is the file has the directory and backslashes in its name.
