I put in a PR for doing this check, but Travis doesn't seem to want to do anything...

Also, good thing this bug was filed. I've been slightly annoyed in the past with silent failures coming from this method. 👍

Next time, file the feature request yourself. :) Whenever possible we go for clear errors.

Looks to me like this fix was merged, so I'm going to go ahead and close out the issue.
