Python test suite: limited tests

The CI suite for Python only runs a single smoke test, not all of the tests. This is because there's some sort of race condition in GitHub actions that hasn't been figured out yet; however, since the Docker backend runs the Python code -- just in a Docker container -- the functionality is covered, just it would be better if the Python tests could directly run.
