@dznz Yo, are we still on to meet up? Where, when etc? I am just about to set out to Reuben, in case you are going there.

I do not feel worried about this, or indeed at all, but intellectually I know that it signals that something is amiss.

Mon Sep 03 2012 19:01:02 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@Tzrlk You would have to read a fairly large survey of his work to grok the method, as I don't think he ever *actually* explains it; I have not found anything of his that I have actually liked yet, either - hence my surprise at the usefulness of his method; it is kind of like a bizzarro world version of Hegel mixed with Marx. Much like Wittgenstein, or any of the philosophers who are really grappling with hard stuff, the method only becomes easily visible years later. I would recommend Delueze before Žižek, and Wittgenstein before Delueze, and De Saussure before Wittgenstein, and Kant before De Sassure, and Plato before Kant on this topic; there is a lot of assumed knowledge before you can really start grappling with something that might let you grapple with the Outer Darkness in any useful way. As such, it is kind of difficult to talk about what the Outer Darkness is in any concise, tweetable way.
Mon Sep 03 2012 18:15:24 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Žižek may actually be useful, as his methods could be used to actually talk about the Outer Darkness, defying the edict of Wittgenstein.

@littlefuries Alas, in this context 'glorified' actually means 'deluded'.
Wed Aug 01 2012 03:20:03 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Hmm, syntactic ambiguity. To clarify, I (implicitly) claimed that most programmers are glorified clerks, while making another point, and then was shown through the thread (once again) that many of these glorified clerks do not react well to any sentiment that implies or entails that they are glorified clerks being expressed, no matter how well grounded or reasonable the statement itself was. Mmm, comma splices.

My current problem with Ayn Rand, in short rant form: in philosophy, there is actually a literature going back thousands of years. For any kind of theory (eg of ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, aesthetics, even logic) there are a large set of questions and problems that you have to have a good answer for, or at least a good story about how you might get a good answer for them; if you don't, then your theory is just a curiosity that every actual philosopher knows is totally bullshit. The philosophers that students of philosophy regard as Great Philosophers, the ones who have their own schools of thought that lots of people actually study and respect are the ones who managed to formulate a set of theories of many of these kinds which interlocked, and where each of the constituent theories answered their respective sets of questions as they stood at the time, and managed to stand up to new questions for a while. Ayn Rand basically just ignored or misunderstood the literature, and dismissed the questions or answered them in a way that is trivially wrong. Her edifice of theory, Objectivism, is roughly an interlocking set of moral, ethical, aesthetic, ontological, epistemological, logical and metaphysical theories, which cannot stand alone as written. So, she has a lot of surface area to defend, but as the theories interlock in this way, a knock down argument against one is a knock down against all, unless a proponent of Objectivism violates one of the tenants of Objectivism by carving the theories apart into things that would stand alone. Given that, one does not even need to use a new argument to completely discredit Rand and Objectivism; this is what makes me furious about the whole thing. The tiniest smidgin of actual philosophical education would have people laughing at Objectivism as absurd nonsense, rather than believing any of it at all. So, let us take one old problem in Epistemology, namely that of justification of knowledge of the epistemology in question; this is a really basic part of the whole 'groundedness' set of problems. In Objectivism, to use an unbiased summary from an avowed Objectivist, 'Man's consciousness must acquire knowledge of reality by certain means (reason) in accordance to rules (logic/science). Reason is man's only means of perceiving reality, his only source of knowledge, his only guide to action, and his basic means of survival.' So, the only justified means of acquiring knowledge, including about theories of epistemology, and including specifically about Reason and Science, is through Reason and Science. There is no clause for bootstrapping your knowledge, no clause about being *taught* Reason and Science, because how can you be taught justified true knowledge without your own use of Reason and Science if you do not yet have Reason and Science and knowledge that does not come through your use of Reason and Science is not justified, and claims that Reason and Science are innate are firstly matters of fact which can be tested, and have been tested, and turn out to not be true for any meaningful understanding of what Reason and Science are, and secondly would render Reason and Science to be unjustified by Reason and Science, as you are not discovering them in the world through use of Reason and Science, unless they are taken to be self justifying, which again they are not under any meaningful definitions of the terms. Knock down argument; so, her theory of epistemology is totally bunk. To add insult to injury, Rand does not seem to be familiar with the literature in the fields of Philosophy of Logic and Philosophy of Science, yet takes Reason and Science as foundational without even having a theory which solves (for example) the Problem of Induction, a really basic problem in the field that all (real) theories of this sort have an answer for or an explanation of... So, Objectivism is wrong. And there are many more attacks that are perfect knockdowns on every one of her theories, just in the basic literature about each of these kinds of theory alone. And thus my problem: Ayn Rand knew basically nothing about philosophy, and did not do any research, and declared herself to be the supreme expert on philosophy, and had the skill of convincing gullible, uneducated people that she was the supreme expert, and so I keep seeing Objectivist idiocy treated by uneducated fools as if it were in some way equal or superior to all the actual philosophy that has ever been produced, when even availing oneself of a cursory understanding of any of the fields of philosophy that Ayn Rand claimed as part of Objectivism would reveal that she was just flat wrong.

Fri Aug 07 2009 10:15:34 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 I need to pick up the pipes, don't I?
Fri Aug 07 2009 00:02:30 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 Pssh, what I'm doing is perfectly linear these days; it's totally sleeper friendly.
Thu Aug 06 2009 23:52:20 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 Nope, we decided to generate both C++ and javascript at build time from a reasonably simple set of data structures.
Thu Aug 06 2009 22:08:04 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Huh. The Prince of 10,000 Leaves. Dreams. The past. The future as told from a position outside time. Problematic.
Thu Aug 06 2009 21:10:40 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Urgh. Need more super fire.
Thu Aug 06 2009 19:17:31 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
I'd be keen for coffee, rather than the usual clubbing #ThursdayNitePosse
Wed Aug 05 2009 14:33:55 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
You can't fight fire with fire. You have to use super fire.
Sun Aug 02 2009 22:05:41 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 It is to convert from a procedural to a declarative form of mathematical notation.
Sun Aug 02 2009 22:04:39 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 Shoes is a Ruby GUI framework. Very light, very nice. I'm writing a stupid script, but I want to put a nice front end on it.
Sun Aug 02 2009 21:05:48 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Right, Shoes it is.
Sun Aug 02 2009 19:41:52 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Sleep is treacherous.
Sat Aug 01 2009 03:24:52 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Why can I not sleep, ever?
Sat Aug 01 2009 00:01:16 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Oh wow; Naruto is just getting better and better.
Thu Jul 30 2009 08:45:07 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
#ThursdayNitePosse I think I will pass tonight; I'm weary already and the day has yet to begin. Why does this time of day even exist?
Wed Jul 29 2009 17:31:09 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Scratch that, I want to use an RDF serialisation of the DOM+CellML structure, augmented with OpenCell specific display stuff. So wrong...
Wed Jul 29 2009 16:17:28 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Right, I think I should go with an RDF serialisation of XML, and then augment it. This is backwards all the way down...
Mon Jul 27 2009 11:57:22 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Okay, I think I can write a passable (for my use) mod_potion using cgic... This project is rabbit holes all the way down.
Fri Jul 24 2009 16:03:54 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Need more dark magic.
Fri Jul 24 2009 02:18:16 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
I was happy to call it so that I would get to work in the morning. Also, I needed Daft Punk and the club was not providing #ThurdayNitePosse
Fri Jul 24 2009 02:06:27 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@djrubbie alas my vocabulary is constrained to that which is dvcs neutral, and which does not assume any kind of continuity condition.
Fri Jul 24 2009 02:04:42 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
#ThursdayNitePosse was excellent, as always.
Thu Jul 23 2009 16:33:19 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
How do I concisely talk about a set of changesets? Patch # (which comprises changesets #...)?
Thu Jul 23 2009 11:21:06 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
#ThursdayNitePosse I'll be along to Minuit probably, but not before 9:30pm.
Thu Jul 23 2009 00:17:11 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Right, madness pays off. Oh, we know alpha around here...
Wed Jul 22 2009 01:27:53 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Hmm. In my madness, it appears that I forgot sleep. On the other hand, creating complex anaphoric control structures with reader macros...
Wed Jul 22 2009 00:18:29 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Indeed. There is no other choice.
Tue Jul 21 2009 21:51:26 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
So, new data/data manipulation vocabulary it is.
Tue Jul 21 2009 00:05:07 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
From _why: "Sanity tests are outmoded. We’re all sane here. Or past sanity, we’re on to the next thing."
Mon Jul 20 2009 23:41:51 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@djrubbie Okay, by 'sane' I really meant fast. Not sane.
Mon Jul 20 2009 23:28:14 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Right, I think that Potion is going to work out the way Metalua hasn't. Assuming, that is, that I can wire it up to Apache in a sane way.
Mon Jul 20 2009 14:10:58 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Apparently I can. Hmm.
Mon Jul 20 2009 13:57:03 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Why can't I use null as a key?
Sun Jul 19 2009 16:01:19 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@djrubbie Also, 3:38am on a Sunday? Madness. Impressive, but also mad. Good luck, man.
Sun Jul 19 2009 15:53:50 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@djrubbie Indeed. The parts are possible to source, but until now I had thought it would be too much effort for too little gain.
Sun Jul 19 2009 15:46:59 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
That makes it three weeks my laptop has worked this time. Is a month too much to ask?
Sun Jul 19 2009 15:32:39 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
More disappointed than impressed with HP. Laptop has died the bad death. Again.
Sun Jul 19 2009 01:04:45 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
So many birthdays, so little time.
Fri Jul 17 2009 18:40:33 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 electro dubstep calls to you.
Thu Jul 16 2009 20:41:43 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Why do mystery cults always have to structure their internal historiography by way of analogy with a common and overlooked occupation?
Thu Jul 16 2009 20:39:24 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 My creativity was pretty tapped out; Tuesday was a long, vexing day. xml:base != good foreign key, no matter what you may think.
Thu Jul 16 2009 19:48:24 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 @TehReal_YouFool #Misc is such an interesting thing...
Thu Jul 16 2009 18:19:50 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Have I ever mentioned how much I hate MSVC?
Wed Jul 15 2009 23:44:47 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Indeed. #TheDarkFuture is coming; there is so much left to do, and so little time.
Wed Jul 15 2009 23:40:23 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
It's all so clear now.
Wed Jul 15 2009 16:50:30 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Mercurial is has one less likeness to the nimble one on a Win32 VM. That is all.
Tue Jul 14 2009 17:25:49 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
The only true magic is no magic...
Tue Jul 14 2009 00:51:23 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 It truly is a parable for our time. The sharingan = a particular political ideology, which comes cloaked in many forms...
Tue Jul 14 2009 00:49:25 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 He want to be all of the Shadows, _at the same time_, as well as the great adversary of the hidden villages...
Tue Jul 14 2009 00:47:10 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 Ah, it all makes sense! The cloud...
Tue Jul 14 2009 00:46:12 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 Huh, this was all foreshadowed - Itachi gave half of himself to Sasuke, and half to Naruto. Two eyes, one left, one right...
Tue Jul 14 2009 00:44:10 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 Where by Mizukage we mean Madara Uchiha... The ultimate form of the sharingan, redundant, sharded distributed computing...
Tue Jul 14 2009 00:12:53 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
sharingan!Danzou wtf?
Fri Jul 10 2009 14:57:49 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Ugh, I feel so crap at the moment.
Mon Jul 06 2009 23:36:34 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 Indeed, do not blink.
Mon Jul 06 2009 01:20:23 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@djrubbie Sleep probably would be the best idea; the banality of my comments indicate that I am not far off it...
Sun Jul 05 2009 23:08:36 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Why isn't there a xulrunner 1.9.1 official release yet? It hurts me so...
Sun Jul 05 2009 19:09:55 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 I used about 500ml of Hennessey VS making the sauce. It was excessive.
Sun Jul 05 2009 18:10:50 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Crepes were meh. Used too much cognac, not enough lemon rind.
Sun Jul 05 2009 02:00:36 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 No, I was wrong. I think it actually is insomnia. Huh.
Sun Jul 05 2009 01:22:24 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 I was trying to get my head around metalua, and get kepler going. I'm now reading to wind down; I need to make crepes tomorrow.
Sun Jul 05 2009 00:44:33 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
Dreaming of factories...
Fri Jul 03 2009 20:41:04 GMT+1200 (NZST)»
@ayou055 I decided to take the fight to the hypothetical other. This may result in the reification of the other. Wtf, Dorian.
