"Craft" was obviously a not-very-original name and I didn't put any thought into it. It's a hold over from when I first started hacking on this side project.

I'd like to see if anyone has good ideas for a new name?

Perhaps we can highlight the fact that this is more of a creative / builder / sandbox voxel engine and less of a real "game" with objectives.

Voxel Sandbox? Creative Voxels? Creative Sandbox? Voxel Builder? (I just kinda threw some word together).

No no no, no I got it, guys are you ready. are you ready?

Call it 'Populi' (pop-you-lee)

Get it? GET IT? It's because your world is full of people, and because of the common latin expression, 'Vox Populi' - which means voice of the people. Which is appropriate, because people express themselves in the form of Voxels in the world. It's like Voxel Populi. It's a metaphor inside a riddle, inside a puzzle, INSIDE A VIDEO GAME.

It is a triple entendre

But seriously, voxel sandbox = Sandvox?

SandBlock (got sandblock.net just in case).

IMHO the name should if possible represent the players and what they do. Therefore voxels seem somewhat alien and may be difficult to understand.

@Mochnant
Copy link

Unless someone else has it for a different clone, I think the original "Craft" has an excellent simplicity to it. Maybe it is too close to "minecraft" but so are many of the other (some commercial) [YOURNAMEHERE]+craft variants.

emilis commented Jan 12, 2014

@Mochnant Didn't Minecraft had problems with some commercial publisher of a game named "Craft"? Or was it some other indie game?

@Mochnant
Copy link

I know Mojang (makers of Minecraft) had a legal issue with their game "Scrolls" which Bethesda was claiming infringed on their trademark of "The Elder Scrolls" but that was resolved.

Could that be what you're thinking of?

@Bergasms
Copy link

If Mojang has a problem with the name, just challenge them to a round of Quake3. That's how they resolve legal disputes.

I was trying to think of names and the only original thing i could come up with was 6Sides, or Faces, or something like that which references a cube or voxel but doesn't explicitly mention them.

Why don't use the open source aspect ? Currently you didn't really chose a licence for the project, but lets's say it's free (libre in french).
So we have these possibilities:

"Fogle" seems fine too.

@MajorLunaC
Copy link

No offense intended, but fogle is not easy to pronounce or remember, so don't consider it. Yes, I was thinking Ghostbusters from the moment you said Vego. Must be catchy, memorable, easy to pronounce, absolutely unique. It might also be good to reflect the goals and differences versus other minecraft clones. So far, this is the most efficient C/C++ clone I've seen, by far, although I'm worried that may be due to the lack of any moving parts (torches, fire, water, mechanics, etc.) and lack of other people online.
*Proposals: SpeedCraft, V-Miner, GrandMiner, WorldReaver, GlobeReaver, Tectonis, MaxMiner, Blockless (better reserved for one of the clones without blocks, but why not).

Sadly, minecraft servers (not even mods or games) have taken SO many other good names.

@sylvia43

sylvia43 commented Feb 8, 2015

Vego is unique, 👍

@MajorLunaC
Copy link

I want you to search Vego (and really any other name you want) on a search engine that doesn't put you in a filter bubble (See http://dontbubble.us/ ). If it doesn't really get any or many results, it's unique. So far for just "Vego": A design company, Graphic Overlays company, another name for a vegetarian, scooter parts store, trading company, e-cigarette, shoe store, etc. and that's just the first page!

@derhuerst
Copy link

vego 👍

@MajorLunaC
Copy link

sigh It's almost as if you guys are just trolling. I say "Fogle is not that great for this", you say "Fogle!" I say "Vego is not unique or searchable, you say "Vego! Vego! Vego!"
I don't agree with "Vego", but if everyone keeps insisting on it, it has to at least be "VegoCraft" or "VegoMiner" or "VegoDigger" or some other combo.

@Henningstone
Copy link

I'd agree with this, and additionally I really can't associate a "sandbox block building game" with it vego. It actually sounds cool and has a deeper meaning (at least for people knowing what "voxels" are).
But I'm of the opinion too that it should be some combination with things like "Craft, Miner/Digger, Sandbox" or parts of it, because you will immediately have an idea of what kind of game it is when you hear the name. And when for searching it, the only thing which appers is "Do you mean 'lego crafter'?". :)

dymk commented Feb 12, 2015

Guys, I don't want to be a downer here, but the project obviously isn't being developed further. The last commit was made 5 months ago, and the last meaningful commit was 1 year ago. Continuing this conversation probably would be best done in a fork that's actually being developed, if one exists.

@MajorLunaC
Copy link

Well the whole point I argue for a name change is to get more community and developer attention and support. Right now, you can hardly find the game in a search due to SO many other things named "Craft". So even if people hear about it, or are looking for an alternative to minecraft or one of its clones, they will be very unlikely to find it. Go ahead and search "VegoCraft", as Henningstone said above, there's only 1 entry and it's a misspelling error correction guess.

I keep considering asking developers in minetest and its derivatives (voxelands, freeminer) to fork this and develop it further, but I always seem to have a negative/anti- power of persuasion (some of which can be seen above I guess). Any post I make there would have to be me trash-talking about and putting down Craft ... -_-' ... maybe then I can trick them into trying it out and seeing how much more efficient it is.

@dymk
Copy link
Contributor

dymk commented Feb 13, 2015

In that case, I think your best course of action is to fork the repository, do the name change, and start implementing features you'd like to see. People don't rally or get excited around a name change - they do, however, respond to actual progress being made.

Just my two cents: The name isn't nearly as important as you're making it out to be. You could name it something dumb, like, uh, "BlockeyPlaceyGame". If the game is fast, fun, has neat features, then there you go, you'll get a community around it, especially considering you've got the entire Minecraft community to show this to. Case and point: the name "Craft" garnered the front page of Reddit for almost a week, was passed all around the minecraft and programming subs, and was all over HN for a while.

@MajorLunaC
Copy link

I very much disagree. This game is invisible without a name that's unique and searchable. Certainly, tons of features are needed, but the way people view it is just as important. I have run into so many efficient and fast programs and games, and I use many of them, but not many people use them. Why? Oh, simply because the other guys with bloated, slow crap advertise more. You ask a Windows user to name a Linux distribution or anything having to do with Linux, they're likely to say "Ubuntu", because it's even been in the news occasionally. Do you know why there's the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover"? Because everybody judges books by their cover (me included), and the very name "Craft" is part of that cover. If a game is named "BlockeyPlaceyGame", I might not even visit that site, because "what kind of programmer or game designer would come up with such a terrible name?"

The problem with that Reddit example is at least the programming language. I'd have to say that Minecraft is the most successful Java program in existence, and one of extremely few Java programs to have any success. Java is a very crappy programming language, with all too frequent memory leaks (garbage collector system for it just contains the leaks, not stops the leaks) and vast vulnerabilities (critical and dangerous ones that have internet connectivity). I say this because I had to learn it (thanks likely to pay-offs to educational institutions). Back to the point, why would you tell Java users in Minecraft to use C? They already have a game they can mod just fine, and it's polished already. Why trade a polished popular game written in high-level programming language for a barely developed hardly-known game that can barely even be found, with a bad generic name like just "Craft" written in low-level programming language C, having to start almost from scratch and do everything yourself?

Understand that that is targeting the wrong audience. You need developers that are already on the task of finding a perpetual and better replacement for Minecraft, particularly ones familiar with C (not just C++) and likely Lua. Minetest and its derivatives are ideal. Terasology is a very high-quality open-source replacement for Minecraft, and even makes Minecraft look very bad. But I don't recommend looking for devs there because it's still Java.

Take your two cents back. I don't think it did any good.

Why trade a polished popular game written in high-level programming language for a barely
developed hardly-known game that can barely even be found [...]

...And exactly this is the point, and with this read I have to partly agree to @dymk's first statement (before the cents): This game hasn't any big or significant changes/updates since roughly a year, so before thinking about a name, maybe we should migrate this whole repo to somebody else's account, cause @fogleman seems not to be working on it anymore, and it looks like there are no collaborators or something assigned to this project (correct me if I'm wrong).
But there would be the question, namely who should take it over. Of cause somebody who's reliable and active here and has good knowledge of properly using git/GitHub and the game-related stuff. In fact, even I would do it, but I guess you guys don't trust me to do, are you? :P -> Need to find somebody!

...This is just my point of view, and I gave it to be discussed. What do you think?

@ryansturmer
Copy link

Who the eff does this @fogleman character think he is, anyhow, writing a program that he didn't intend to keep up in perpetuity? Do we need to go to this guys house and shake some sense into him? I'm thinking we do! How dare he work on other projects when he could be doing things more interesting to us

You guys need to lighten up. Bunch of crybabies.

@DanielOaks
Copy link

We don't need to worry about migrating the repo or worrying about who will 'take it over'. That's why we have Github – so you can just fork it and start working on it on your own!

If you really think we should have a new maintainer, you should let it show through the work you actually do with the project. @nsg has been doing some damn cool stuff with his fork, even though it's taken a different direction in terms of on/offline play. I've also been doing some (very on and off) work on making it more dynamic and extensible, as two repos that might be useful for anyone looking to extend the project like that.

@petterarvidsson

Btw, @nsg project is now named Konstructs. We are still actively developing it.

Maybe there should be a link to Konstructs in the readme or something?
