In the last couple of days I checked the latest posts several times. I found a few 10s of spam messages.
There were a few accounts that already had several earlier spam messages: This one already had 18 spam messages. Some of them already 8 days old. Another one that has been around for several days.
However, most of the spam posts were made by accounts immediately after the account was created.
I saw that some of these new accounts published as much as 11 hours before I saw them. I know it is Saturday after Thanksgiving and it was night time in the USA. However the fact that those posts were still up means that in this period either they were not reported or there was no admin available to take them down.
I don't know what is in place already so maybe these are all available. Is there a page explaining the spam-prevention mechanisms that are already used?
Anyway I am thinking aloud how to reduce the spam:
Make it easier to report spam.
Right now in In the "Abuse report" page after I select the SPAM radio button I still need to type in something in the text-box at the bottom.
In most case I just type in "spam" or "looks like spam". It is still a lot of extra work and I there is no real extra information I can add. Can we remove that requirement to make it easier to report SPAM?
Waiting period
Make people wait a certain amount of time after registration before they can post (e.g a few hours, maybe a day)
Require approval for first post
Require administrative approval for the first post of each account.
Meaning that when a new account posts, the article will enter a queue and someone (with some elevated rights) need to approve it before it shows up. This could be crowd-sourced by creating a list of all the new posts of all the first-time posters and when N number of people have liked a post it will be automatically allowed in. Maybe limit whose "like" counts. e.g. only members who have been on the site for at least 1 month. That will limit the possibility that a spammer creates several accounts to "like" the post of the spamming account.
Automatically hide posts that are reported by volunteers
e.g. if at least 3 people marked something as spam it could be automatically be hidden.
