This'll be a big change.

The existing upgrade script on formtools.org is unmaintainable. It grew over time, wasn't refactored well enough over the years, covers too many scenarios, covers too many database changes and idiosyncracies.

The plan:

  • Move the upgrade script to part of the Core, found in every Form Tools installation.
  • Recreate the upgrade page in React + Redux. This is a really complex UI problem and backend just ain't gonna cut it.
  • formtools.org will continue to maintain the component dependencies and contain the build package script and public custom build scripts.
  • formtools.org offers the dependency information via a REST/jsonp/whatever feed. That feed structure will be standardized (no more version idiosyncracies!)
  • Installations will ping formtools.org for the information and display the upgrade form internally.
  • Have the PHP scrape and install the modules directly on the user's server without needing to leave the interface.
  • Tie in the System Check module as a requirement to run after installations to confirm upgrades worked as expected.
