This was needed to get the KVM to boot with "QEMU emulator version 2.11.1(Debian 1:2.11+dfsg-1ubuntu7.14)" that comes with Ubuntu 18.04 / KDE Neon

Not all distros have q35 as a working alias, unfortunately. A note would be better fitting as the project aims to support upstream QEMU and as many older versions as possible that don't require changes.

Fair enough... What about a different approach of probing the highest support version in make.sh and then substituting that into the template before it's loaded?

qemu-system-x86_64 --machine help | grep q35 | cut -d" " -f1 | egrep -oe ".*-[0-9.]+" | sort -rV | head -1

On my machine that spits out pc-q35-2.11 which corresponds with the version of QEMU I have (2.11.1).

That can work, with the assumption that only minimal utilities are available.

What prevent you to use a ppa or building from sources? From my experience qemu 3 and especially 3.1 has much better performance.

@paulcarroty, time... Faster for me (and others) to change one line of the template file than to go hunting around for a PPA that is carrying 3.0 and way way way faster than trying to setup a build chain for qemu. If you have a good PPA please add it to the FAQ.
