https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/cutting-edge/#freebsdupdate-portsrebuild for major OS upgrades includes:

# pkg-static upgrade -f

– but does not forewarn that a FreeBSD-provided package of a kernel module might be unusable with the upgraded OS.

Add a warning to an earlier part of this section of the chapter.

Sorry for the added reviewers: it was a mistake, I wanted to add them on another pull request.

This comment was marked as outdated.

Change stable/9 to stable/13.

Change most other examples that are relevant to current situation – 13.2-RELEASE announcement expected tomorrow.

(Where this commit intentionally refrains from changing relevant examples: additional minor changes to wording may be appropriate. These can be drafted post-release.)
Remove trailing white spaces.

For future reference:

  • this first sentence is not accurate – not entirely true.

If I had made the paragraph accurate, then the (relative) complexity would have detracted from the key point of the warning.

Generally, I try to avoid warning boxes and note boxes – their presence sometimes signals an underlying need to restructure things.

In this case, I chose a warning box because we were approaching the date of release of 13.2.

(It's easier/quicker to gain approval to commit a condensed warning, than it is to gain approval for a broader restructure.)
