Google Analytics is great, but it exposes users activity to Google.
We must defend software freedom, our users deserve better.
We're getting rid of GA.

Search for a Free (both as in speech AND beer) alternative to Google Analytics.
If one cannot be found, build one.

Here are some requirements:

  • Must be Open Source
  • Must work the same way as GA (all you need to do is add a javascript file on your pages)
  • The backend must be easily deployable separately from the website being monitored, preferrably in a free cloud host service like Heroku or Appengine.
  • Bonus points if the backend is made in Python.
  • Must have basic reports that display website usage and growth.

I know Piwik (http://piwik.org/) and OWA (http://www.openwebanalytics.com/). I'm not sure if they are PHP.

Already got a running instance of Piwik up and running on Openshift.
Tracking is already working on my local env.
I could never had imagined this would be so simple.
This will be in production soon.
Really thanks for the tip!

Just pushed the new script to production. As of 10 minutes ago, google analytics is not used by FS anymore.
Before I close this issue I just need to add a config setting to only turn on tracking in prodcution.

PS: I have just become a fan of this Piwik guy.
The quality is amazing. Those guys did a really good job. I'm thinking this deserves a blog post :-)
