Cancer Nodes

Stephen Oliver edited this page Apr 3, 2017 · 1 revision

Cancer Nodes are malicious nodes, they may block specific keys, harvest nodes, flood the network, or otherwise be evil.

These are the biggest internal security concern for Freenet.

Cancer nodes on opennet may pretend to be a large number of real nodes.

A classic attack against Freenet 0.5 is to create a "super node" which pretends to be many different nodes, and always resets the node reference on any successful request to one of its other aliases.

This "super node" can quickly connect to every other node on the network, allowing further attacks to be carried out, such as a de-anonymization attack to monitor the requests of other nodes.
