N1 is a the Soviet counterpart to US Saturn V designed for crewed moon landings. The distinctive 3 stage rocket carries the L3 lunar payload to low orbit including a Soyuz 7K-L3 LOK Command Module and LK Lander. The massive Blok-A first stage houses 30 NK-15 engines. Historically, the Blok-G stage would be used for Trans Lunar Injection and the Blok-D for mid-course correction, Low Orbit Insertion and de-orbit. The N1F was a concept vehicle that would have used uprated NK-43 engines on the Blok-B and NK-31 engines on the Blok-V.

Basic Build Guide

The L3 Complex includes the LOK Lunar Orbiter, LK Lander and Blok-D all topped by a Launch Escape System. Mount the LES on 3 octagonal struts attached to the Petra docking port of the Soyuz to give it some clearance above the fairing. Refer to the Crew Modules page for details of the Soyuz 7K-L3 LOK itself.

LK Lander

In launch configuration, the LK Lander docking port attaches to the bottom of the Soyuz service module and is mounted on the Blok-D stage (LV-F30 fuel tank with the LV-T15 engine). Unlike the US Apollo lander, there is not crew access through the docking port so the pilot has to EVA to board the lander.

LK

N1 Core Stage

Blok D and LK are covered by a fairing terminating at the base of LOK. The whole upper stage including Blok-G and the L3 Complex is covered by a second, outer fairing and topped by the Launch Escape System.
