Hey @geerlingguy you should take a look at the linuxserver.io image for Mastodon. It automates the setup fairly nicely and docker being docker, lets you hop between releases with minimal headache.

You just need a docker-compose file with the mastodon image, redis, and postgres. I can provide an example config if you are interested.

I had a look at a number of different Mastodon Docker setups but wanted to work from principles since IMO it's easier to work on certain types of scaling running on the VM direct.

But I also want to see how the guts work a little better before I go containers, especially to make I understand things like backups and restores better (just copying around Docker volumes isn't as fun).
