Description

Ghostery is set to block all tracker categories.

If you click on any article while browsing The New Yorker, you can scroll down far enough and see a video in the middle of the page.

  1. The video always starts with a pre-roll ad.
  2. If Firefox's global autoplay setting is set to is set to Allow Audio and Video or Block Audio, the video plays without the user toggling. The pre-roll ad initiates. (The player respects Firefox's preference to Block Audio and Video as a global autoplay setting or site specific setting.)
  3. Regardless, this video — unrelated to the main content — should not appear at all when the user has Audio/Video player category blocked globally. And the ad should not play if the user allows the video player.

The proposed solution would be to add this video to Ghostery's Audio/Video Player category as this category isn't triggered at all when reading various articles. There also needs to be a intervention for when you allow the video to play — the ad always starts.

Expected Behavior

  1. This video — unrelated to the main content — should not appear at all when the user has Audio/Video player category blocked globally.
  2. If the user allows the Audio/Video player category, it should not play an ad before the video content.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Go to https://www.newyorker.com/
  2. Click on any article.
  3. Scroll down mid-way and you will get a video.

Versions

Affects all browser configurations. My specific build:

I've implementing DNS-level blocking since I've posted this issue. I'm unsure if it's blocking the video now or if it's Ghostery's new Annoyance option, but this is no longer an issue for me when I use Ghostery.
