As discussed on the mailing list, Junio's release process is more than
just running a git archive command or equivalent. The official tarballs
contain a pregenerated configure script and adds a correct version file.

The link has been updated to point to the official URL for downloading
the git tarballs, as specified by the git [ANNOUNCE] messages on the

mailing list.

Cool, I guess I'll have to relent on this. I was using the github.com/git/git url to check for what the current release was since GitHub has an API and Junio was keeping up the mirror and he hadn't specified a single canonical release URL. Perhaps that has changed. There is still an issue that since Google Code has no API for me to check the current release there is a chance that what we're showing on the site and what is in the GCode downloads area differ, but I guess we'll have to take that chance until either Junio uses GitHub more or GCode gets an API.

I'm not sure that Google Code even understands the idea of a release. It seems like just a pile of uploaded files and some subset of them tagged as "featured" downloads. Presently the current tarball is the only featured download, but I don't know if that is always the case, or if it is kept well-updated.
