I'd like to report that

$a$$b$

is not rendered correctly as ab (in math font). It rather gives

It does work in with dollar-backtick inline math.

As you also mentioned before, using $ is ambiguous.

There is no clear definition about what it should be rendered as.

So IMO it should be avoided, and you can use the new $`...`$ syntax.

GitHub's behavior:

$a$$b$

GitHub should probably not be used as a reference. Many simple things like

$\{a\,b\}$

don't render correctly here:

$$\{a\,b\}$$

but thankfully work on Gitea. The reference is LaTeX.

Anyway, I do realize that the $-syntax is problematic. Should I rather not submit issue for this syntax?

I am not sure whether end users should really write something like $a$$b$ but not $ab$ or $a$ $b$ (why).

If there is no clear definition or is really used in daily work, then it's fine to leave unclear syntax as-is.

Because the more patches we add to the unclear syntaxes, the more likely to have new breakings/bugs/regressions. Sometimes doing less is better than doing more, especially when the situation is unclear.

People just copy and paste their original LaTeX work and notice that it doesn't work. This particular case could be supported (GitLab does, for example), but I realize this might be a waste of developer resources. Your call.
