Creating pipelines using os/exec is somewhat tedious. There are a couple of good external packages that provide higher-level interfaces:

Brad asked me to file an issue to think about making this better for Go 1.6.

Related: it's common to want the text of stderr on failure, but not as CombinedOutput. The pipe package calls this DividedOutput:

@josharian josharian added this to the Go1.6 milestone Jun 11, 2015

@rsc rsc modified the milestones: Unplanned, Go1.6 Nov 5, 2015

@bradfitz bradfitz removed their assignment Apr 24, 2017

I have some time to look into this. @Sajmani can the external packages mentioned in your initial comment still be seen as "good" to address your concerns? Are there any current ideas about what the main pain-points still are and in which direction to go?
