Since Chrome 46, the ability for tabs to automatically play content in the background is disabled by default.

The player will unpause only when the tab has focus again.
Until a better solution, you can disable this feature in the browser :

  1. Go to this URL from the address bar : chrome://flags/#disable-gesture-requirement-for-media-playback
  2. Click Disable.
  3. Restart Chrome.

UPDATE This flag has been removed (by mistake ?) since chrome 60.
While awaiting for a fix, the only option for now is to grab the active tab and to move it away from the main window of your browser, so Spiff still gets the focus it needs to play audio.
