Administrators will want to be able to control (through an API/DB based mechanism) whether their users are able to create Public Dashboards. This allows Admins to enable this feature when needed and permitted, but lock down the feature when sharing data publicly would not be appropriate. |

Thanks for this thought @mnako1, we think we'd use RBAC for this control-ability, and by default only allow admins to enable public dashboards. Do you think that would be sufficient for your use case? |

We have implemented RBAC controls for this so it can be managed via API like all other RBAC controls. |

Sounds fantastic! I definitely agree with @mnako1 though that this should be a permissions thing. Perhaps a specific permission under the GFE/GFC RBAC stuff, and only allowed by Admin in the basic offering? |

snapshots don't work well because it seems like it will never fetch new data. if i have a dashboard owned by my org and want to share it publicly with live updates, afaik there's no good way to do that. |

The way we are thinking about public dashboards is you would get a generated link that you could share with anyone (no auth required). Would that be sufficient? |

@mattgodbolt we are going to look into CloudWatch. In talking with the AWS plugin team here at Grafana they mentioned that the cloudwatch plugin is in-fact a backend datasource but there are some parts that only operate on the front end, so we need to look into that one more closely 🔍 . |

Hello, I have enabled this feature and shared out a dashboard. However, once I view the dashboard, every component says "No Data". I am using the Infinity data source plugin to visualize some data from CSV files. (https://github.com/yesoreyeram/grafana-infinity-datasource). Based on what you said up above about Thanks! |

Infinity data source makes custom transformations on the frontend after getting the data from the backend, which is why it is not compatible with Public Dashboards. We are looking for the best ways to determine which data sources are 100% compatible with public dashbaords. |

Infinity 1.0.0 is now compatible with public dashboards. You need to use 'backend' parser and it works with JSON data types. Support for csv backend parsing is coming in infinity 1.1.0 which is due for release. |

Great feature! So far I was sharing my dashboard to the public by enabling anonymous authentication. Public dashboards will be much better for me, because users won't be able to access any other Grafana pages. |

I would love time range editing and variables editing. Support for max length time range and min/max date would be great against DDOS but I would prefer to have time range sooner than waiting for that feature, because it is possible to limit the time range length with the query. |

This is a fantastic feature. Well done Team! :) We use Grafana to display IoT data - and one of the key things we need to display to the public is water level of of streams and rivers. The new Public Feature nearly solves this issue but I would also like to be able to allow the public to define a time line themselves rather than the default of the dashboard itself. Is there a way of factoring that in? This would help school kids compare and contrast between different years of data. Another item of feedback is when the member of the public clicks and drags on the timeline, the other elements on the dashboard are not recalculating their values as they would on the normal dashboard view. Non-specific timeline and values
Zoomed in on a specific time period, note how the min, max, difference and average have not changed.
Thanks so much - it is a great feature and I know our local tax payers will really benefit from the extra information available to them. |

I have the same issue as @scysys. In my case the Query Mode is "Text" and Data Source is Zabbix. The item is the status of a ssl certificate (Cert: Last validation status). Do you need more details? Is there some workaround ? Thanks in advance |

@sebelk Thanks for the bug report. I made an issue to investigate it. Seems like a bug. From a quick look, the Zabbix plugin should work with public dashboards. Keep an eye on the Github issue for further updates. |

this feature is very useful thank you for the hard work 🙏 one issue I've encountered with public dashboards on grafana (deployed using the helm chart) is that even with persistence enabled, a dashboard is no longer public after restarting the deployment. any idea as to why that may be? |

@evictorero thanks for the response. with my setup, there is a volume that everything is saved to that persists across restarts. so other changes I have made to users/dashboards etc persist, but the dashboards do not remain public. is this expected? |

Hi, an setting, which replaces the index / login page with an public dashboard would be cool. Use case: Everybody who visits https://example.com/ see directly the dashboard and not the login page. Thanks for grafana! |

Hi, maybe this problem has already been solved, but I wanted to mention that I'm running Grafana on Windows and have configured both the 'defaults' and 'custom' files to enable public dashboards. Everything appears to be working fine, and I have even created a public dashboard. However, I'm unable to access the public dashboard from another computer; it only works on the localhost. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong since I've only started using Grafana a few days ago. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! |

Awesome feature! As the feature isn't supported by grafana as code yet, sharing an URL is currently almost useless, as it will be a different link the next time grafana is restarted, even if we then reenable the public dashboard manually. |

Hello ! Thank you for the feature it is very interesting and usefull ! I have one question tho, I've been trying it with one personal project but it seems like tables are rendered differently in the "public" view to the "private" view. I'm using promtail 2.8.2, grafana 9.5.1 and loki 2.4.2 using a docker-compose and grafana is behind a nginx reverse-proxy that I setup. My issue is that I would like the table panel to be rendered like a list. The data is here and I have to filter with every username to see the count for each username. But i would like it to look like this: I've checked the browser console but nothing indicates any error. Also tested on Firefox 113.0.1 (64 bits) and Chrome 113.0.5672.126 |

It is not intended but we saw this issue in some cases where the data source plugin makes a transformation after receiving the data from the backend. Can you please create an issue with more info about how to reproduce it so we can take a further look? |

I think its doing what you are asking. The time range is for the whole dashboard, not just a single panel. If you select a time range for the las 5 days and save it, then the public dashboard will show all panels for the last five days. You can't have one panel displaying two weeks and a second panel displaying 1 week. The only way to approximate this would be to have your sql select cut off data at one week and then select a time range of two weeks. |

Overview
Hi everyone, our team at Grafana is working on a fun new feature we are calling Public Dashboards. We have heard from quite a few customers that they would like a way to expose a single dashboard to anonymous access for various reasons; kiosks, status pages, or just sharing their research with the world.
How Does it Work?
The way that we are envisioning this working is on a given dashboard, in the share modal you will be able to toggle on "Public Access". Then you can select a time range and eventually be able to select which values you want preconfigured if you have variables. Then a URL will be generated that you can share with others. The link will be on an unauthenticated path, and the public dashboard view will be read-only.
Why Discussion?
We are adding this discussion to see what use cases others may have that we should consider as we are building.
