I'd like to redefine the colour palette, just a little bit. Basically adjusting the hues of the green and brown and then adding other colours for more flexibility.

Available here: http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/2403225/Family_Room

Green: #339966
Brown: #8A4B21

Basically, more vibrant colours and more choices.

Luckily the way our CSS is done, we can achieve that relatively easily.

  • Gittip is a money-moving platform, about which people should rightly feel conservative.
  • Gittip is intended to encourage long-term thinking over short-term urgency.
  • Gittip's motto is "Inspiring generosity." We want Gittip to feel expansive and optimistic, but steadily so, not a fever pitch of emotion but a controlled and persistent optimism.

These are the values our visual design needs to communicate, and in that context I think it's appropriate for the color scheme to be somewhat calmer than, say, Avaaz. That said, I do think we should add one or two more colors, to be used sparingly for emphasis.

I propose that we keep the existing grey/green/brown, and add an additional color or two, e.g.:

I've given @jeromegn the go-ahead on modifying the color scheme as he sees fit, after this IRC convo.

@jeromegn We're missing each other on IRC, so I figured I'd follow up here. :-)

do you like the new colours I tried?

Not yet, but I'm willing to trust you with this. You're doing good work! Keep it up! :D

I think things would feel stable(?) if we stuck to shades of the teal and brown hues (predominantly).
I prefer the original bluer green, unless we are moving toward an association with money green.

Getting a second neutral to work well with brown is tricky. And might force you to keep them less saturated than it seems like we are headed.

Design Seeds bases palettes on photos. We might do well at finding something that includes the grey and brown using nature-- with some tweaking of course.

More thinking. How many colors do we need? Probably operating on fewer gets less difficult to handle design wise with so many people inside the project working.
Even just having three approved values of each hue might give flexibility but maintain cohesion.
I pulled some photos with similar palettes and added a gittip-esque palette myself for each.
If we stick with Teal, Grey and Brown with two or three values of each, do we want to add one color? Two colors?
Some of the palettes we are looking at are almost a full gittip spectrum. Do we want to work with a version of each pure chroma?
If so, Brown might be our red/orange, we seem to be moving toward adding a yellow or beige, we have a green/blue, then is a purple desired? If so we may have to shade it down to fit in with the others so it doesn't stick out.
Here are the images I played with.

bird
peacock

asparagus
hearts

If it helps any, here are shades of our current colors picked straight from the homepage.
Currently they are different values. The more balanced choice using the teal as the base would be at a diagonal,
the first of the top line, the second of the middle and third of the bottom.
