Gettin' roped into a parade here in Ambridge (where people go to blow off their day job). The parade is on December 13. What should our float be?

We started out thinking of getting a giant truck tire and bolting plywood to it, but we don't want to kill any kids. How can we make something light enough that it's not too dangerous? How about canvas over a PVC frame?

Down the truck tire line we were thinking it would have width, a foot or three. Then we were thinking wood-only. But that's still so heavy!

Now with pvc+nylon we are thinking that it's two-dimensional. No width. Basically a hula-hoop.

Thinking through this with @kaguillera. We'll want to sew up most of the circle and then turn it inside out and sew the rest of it except for six inches or so. Then we'll feed the tubing into the circle and join the ends of the tube. Ideally we can join the tubing in such a way that we can easily undo it and collapse the thing. Maybe we get a 3/4" internal coupling for the 1" tube, and then screw through it? We don't need it to be water-tight (I guess for normal applications you have to heat the tubing to get a tight seal).

Jess thinks we should be able to use our sewing machine for the drop cloths. I'd prefer canvas to foam as a material: we can compost it when we're done with it, for one. It will also break down smaller: maybe we can transport it PyCon for a backdrop for the booth (gratipay/inside.gratipay.com#111)?

I propose to up my take from the Gratipay team to cover the expense for this. Once we have this we'll be able to use it at events, so it represents a long-term marketing asset for the team, to go along with the penny puncher. I think @chrisdev can attest that having some kind of banner or backdrop would improve the PyCon booth experience, for example.

Any objections?

New plan: no cutting, no sewing. Just gonna make an eight-foot heart coin stencil and spray paint onto drop cloths. Will drape over minivan for parade (will probably need a frame).

Inside of top curve goes 32.9 in from top edge.

Bottom point goes 21.431 in from bottom edge.

That's for a 91-inch circle, which is about how it turned out. I think I made the heart stencil based on a 92-inch circle, so we'll have a little fudge.

@chrisdev Yeah! With the zipper it's easy to take the hoop out. I'm hoping we can coil up the hose enough to make it easy to ship. Since Amazon shipped it here, so I'm hopeful. :-)

Neat! Looks like it is done from fur. Could be a white spot on the side
