Started a convo here.

Kinda wanna punch heart-shaped holes in pennies. Would need a press + tooling. Custom punch and die is ~$300 from Cleveland Punch and Die, per convo with their friendly salesman Michael Stratis. He recommended a Roper Whitney handheld. Here's a capacity chart. Pennies are 0.061 inches thick and are either copper (before 1983) or zinc (after 1983); both are softer than steel. The smallest RW press, the Junior, is rated 1.2 tons and is $90 new and is also readily available on eBay. However, according to that capacity chart the Junior might have a hard time punching 1/2-inch holes in pennies. The next step up is ~$150 used:

Could you have the pennies pre-hole punched and then provide them to attendees as tokens, who could hand them out during the conference to presenters or folks they meet in the hallway that gave them a useful piece of information or inspired them to do something? They would be like In Real Life gift tips.

At the end they could be redeemable at the booth for some sort of reward? Perhaps a special PyCon leaderboard? Attendees bring their gift pennies to the booth, give their username, and their pennies are tallied over the course of the conference.

@whit537 just handing out pennies with hearts might not get the message out. Could you tie a not to each one with a link to the website and quick description? Also, I think bringing the press to the conference could be a cool attraction.

@jesselegg I like the idea of the PyCon leader board. Maybe you could have some jars at the booth representing sessions, speakers, or projects/companies at the conference. When people drop by the gittip booth they can drop tips in the jars of sessions they thought went well. After the conference you can drop off a sack of pennies with a note to the top earners explaining what gittip is and how to get involved.

I like the idea of giving everyone at the conference a chunk of change for them to distribute throughout the conference. Then we have a coin counter and people can cash in. Maybe it goes on the site itself somehow.

How about a price list for contributions:

  • install Gittip on your laptop for the first time: 100 coins
  • submit a pull request: 50 coins
  • comment on a ticket: 10 coins (up to 10 comments?)

We'll call it the First Bank of Gittip or something. So we keep circulating these coins and minting more on the spot as needed. People can cash them in on the spot or take them with them to hand out to others, who can regift them or cash them in as well.

I bought a Roper Whitney No. 8 on eBay:

 KGrHqJ g4FC4b 3S-SBQ1gqflqvg 60_12

Should see it in a week or two. Been talking to Cleveland Punch and Die as well about the custom heart tooling (the image was part of that conversation). The heart will have to be about 15% smaller relative to a penny than the heart on the Gittip logo is relative to the circle. Seems like it's going to work otherwise, though. :)

Maybe we only issue coins during the first half of the conference and only collect them during the second half?

The limitation with the coins is that we can't keep track of who gives. We don't have a hook into that part of the flow.

Held out for the brass-housing coin counter and couldn't meet the reserve (I went up to $100!). In the mean time the other coin counter sold for $33. :-/ Oh well. Let's see if they relist. :-)

Hmm... You know, I have several manual ammunition reloading presses. I'm fairly sure they're more than strong enough to punch holes in pennies, seeing as they're normally used to form brass cases. I'll dig.

New idea! How about etching pennies?

090109 138 1

Instructions (geared to PCBs, but applicable):
http://www.instructables.com/id/Stop-using-Ferric-Chloride-etchant!--A-better-etc/

This is a little bit harder to set up, and not as portable to do it on-location, but with a custom stamp you could probably do 1,000 of the little guys in a couple of hours...

Neat! I actually started a little home chem lab for Christmas. Sounds like a fun project for that. :-)

The situation though is that I've already dropped dollars on the punch and the counter, so I'm kinda bought in on the punching pennies idea.

Also, I just got the booth guidelines, and we're going to have to be somewhat creative to work with the union rules:

You can only bring in materials yourself they can be brought in by one person in one trip. If your materials
weigh 200# or less we offer a cartload service. Anything over 200# requires the material handling form.

  • You may NOT wheel in materials yourself.

And:

You may set up your exhibit display if one person can accomplish the task in less than one-half (1/2) hour without the use of tools.

I remember the Heroku booth being awesome last year because it was furnished all nicely with comfy chairs and a coffee table and whatnot. It was inviting and people ended up just hanging out there. I want the Gittip/Balanced booth combo to also be inviting and a place where people hang out. Might need to order some chairs at the very least.

Talked to Casey, our contact with TriCord, the company managing the show. I'm thinking of ordering four extra chairs and 500W of juice. That would be $260. We can turn the table sideways and we'll have six chairs around. We can put the punch and counter on the aisle end and maybe a lamp and power strip on the other end. Hacking and punching! :D

What font does the logo use? I'll make up a sample.

Heard back from Cleveland re: rounding. They'd be doing the punch with an end mill which is why we have the limitation with the rounding. They recommended Sossner Stamps who have a conventional EDM machine which supposedly could be used to achieve the inside point on the heart. I've contacted Anna at Sossner and am hoping to hear back tomorrow. It's going to be more expensive, not sure how much yet.

Sossner declined to quote the job, as they don't think they can do better than the design we've already got. Looped back around with Cleveland to give the green light again. Maybe someday we can figure out how to get this right, for now we'll have to go with what we've got.

Just spoke with @whit537. Here's the update from Balanced, Gittip's open partner:

I've been delinquent on my PyCon duties, and failed to order anything for our booth, even a banner, so the Balanced booth (#234), right next to the Gittip booth will be without carpet, electricity, chairs, etc. @whit537 mentioned we could order things on-site, but I'm predicting our space to be pretty sparse.

Which brings me to my point: this is a formal invitation to @whit537 and any other Gittipers to use the Balanced space as your own. We can figure out the details on the ground, but since we'll have adjacent booths, it doesn't make sense for ours to sit there underused while the Gittip booth runneth-over (as I'm sure it will).

jkwade commented Mar 13, 2013

I'm running pretty well behind myself, and am only now about to start making decals.

The design is here, and I'll have a photo of a physical proof in a couple of hours.

Last year, I'd say half the booths were bare-bones, just a pile of t-shirts on a table with someone sitting behind it. There's no way we'll compare with the Heroku and Google booths on swank. I think we'll be able to make up for it in other ways, though. :)

Well, our swag is cash, and it recurs every week. That has to count for something :)

Decals are done - ~250 of them complete and in my suitcase. I've not heard back from the guy with the cutter yet, so we'll see if I'm able to make more on-site.

I'm off to print up my boarding passes, then try to get a QR code to my Gittip profile on address labels, to apply to the backs of my business cards.

Nothing like waiting until the last minute :)
