Reticketed from #118 (comment).

As an aside, has anyone thought to contact the authorities about these sites in question?

Whom do we approach about this? The FBI? Let's figure out the right agency to talk to and see if we can get an answer from the horse's mouth about 8chan's standing vis-a-vis law enforcement.

Looks like fear, uncertainty and despair is all over Gratipay. What if they will tell you that 8chan is evil, but they need help from Gratipay to help move them to jail? I don't want to be a part of that.

I don't understand why this is a Gratipay thing at all, if you Chad Whitacre want to contact the authorities why wouldn't you do that on your own time.

Because we don't understand our obligations as Gratipay regarding criminals who use our site, and 8chan is the presenting case.

Okay! I just got off the phone with the FBI. Per their advice, I called the Pittsburgh office, and spoke with one of their agents. Here's a paraphrase of our conversation:

I run a funding platform called Gratipay and we have a user, 8chan, that people on Twitter are saying hosts child pornography. Can you tell me whether 8chan is a criminal?

No, I just take in information, I don't give out information.

Is there someone else there who can give out information?

No, we don't do that.

Are you aware of another federal agency that would be able to advise me on this?

No.

What are my liabilities as a business owner for potentially enabling illegal activity by providing a funding platform for 8chan?

Unless you're 100% certain that they're a criminal then you have no up-front obligation.

May I record this conversation on a public internet forum?

Yes.

So, time to get this over with?

Yes! I'm satisfied for the time being that we're not doing something foolish from a legal standpoint by allowing 8chan to use Gratipay, because it's not at all clear to me that 8chan is criminal.
