...ideally with its own symbol. Or, as stop-gap, or permanently (to counter one aspect of "Too many icons"), e.g. with the same symbol as "amenity=bench", given they serve a similar purpose, very roughly at least. And showing loungers as benches may be better than showing nothing at all.

Currently, default OSM style does not render "amenity=lounger" at all.

OsmAnd recently made changes to display loungers with their own symbols going forward.

iD also shows loungers with their own symbol.

At this time, there aren't too many loungers yet (OSM wiki indicates about 1500 nodes carrying the tag). But they are being installed more and more in recent years, and mappers start mapping them with that tag right from the start (rather than using amenity=bench), or even re-tag loungers previously tagged as bench to lounger.

So there is a clearly accelerating trend that the number of loungers mapped as amenity=lounger is increasing since it was apparently first introduced in 2018, in my view warranting for it to be rendered in the OSM default map in one way or another (rather than being "invisible" there).

As additional input, please see the discussion regarding OsmAnd adding support for rendering loungers.

I understand those items are "approved", so I'd assume that there was some kind of consensus as to their "legality".

Are you saying that process was flawed, and it should be reopened?

These items seem to violate the OSM principle:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Good_practice#Don.27t_map_temporary_events_and_temporary_features

Both usages documented on the wiki page are permanent enough for being accepted by this rule. The first type is just as permanent as most benches.

amenity=lounger has 1500 uses predominantly in Germany.

The documentation indicates its primary purpose to be mapping mobile furniture - which as others have indicated does not belong in OSM and we should therefore not support in rendering. De facto use of the tag is however predominantly for fixed installations - see for example here for a style very common in Germany in the past years. If a consensus on tagging those in a distinct fashion (i.e. distinct from the questionable mapping of mobile furniture) develops and is documented then i would find it in principle suitable for rendering here.

Note however designing a suitably generic symbol would still be a challenge. It is advisable to have a look at past discussion about distinct rendering of benches with backrest in #3187.

As mentioned above, this tag is not widely used yet, and is geographically limited. We should close this issue for now, but it can be re-opened in the future if this tag becomes more widely used and clearly defined.
