I don't particularly like the idea of rendering unclassified wider than residential. It would encourage the idea that it's a higher classification

Interesting - I was sure that highway=residential is below highway=unclassified in its importance.

According to what I know about UK road classification, residential are subset of unclassified roads. highway=residential is used for these less important, used only to reach local residential areas.

It is not conclusive, but in https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Mateusz%20Konieczny/diary/35389 some people commented on residential/unclassified change and nobody considered their importance as the same.

Since http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Key:highway&diff=980296&oldid=969094 wiki has

  • {{tag|highway|unclassified}} '''least important in standard road network'''
  • {{tag|highway|residential}} smaller road for access to residential properties

On the other hand I just found http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Highway:International_equivalence that claims that for many countries the same road should be highway=unclassified outside residential area and highway=residential inside.

I am not sure what would be the thing to do. Ask on tagging? Revert and ask on tagging?

See also http://www.openstreetmap.org/note/399513 for other relevant part of highway=residential/unclassified confusion.

@pnorman highway=unclassified is indeed of higher importance in residential areas. Outside of residential areas, but still urban, highway=residential is often not used. I advocate for more usage of highway=residential, but many tag this highway type only if there are houses on the side.

Inside a residential area unclassified can be used for:

  1. Connecting the unclassified from outside through to the next higher classification, e.g. here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/168510739 or here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/155619568
  2. Mark roads of high importance to the quarter where tertiary would not fit (e.g. no through-traffic): http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/203914369

It now looks arbitrary that some highways differ slightly only at a specific, relatively low zoom.
