(Anti-)Hardware-Database of grml

Problems with specific hardware? Please report it! If you can't boot the grml system, don't despair! The grml team is ready to help you! We are especially interested in hearing about startup problems, because in general they don't happen to only one person. We've either already heard about your particular problem and can dispense a quick fix, or we would like to hear about it and work through it with you, and the next user who comes up with the same problem will profit from your experience!

Tips

If you experience lockups or other hardware failures, disable buggy APIC interrupt routing:

          grml noapic nolapic

Disable ACPI for PCI maps (some HP servers and Via-based machines):

          grml pci=noacpi

Deactivate SMP-kernel and use only one processor:

          grml nosmp

Disable framebuffer if you get a black/blank screen or notice problems with your display via:

          grml video=ofonly

... or just:

          nofb

  1. Acer Aspire 1690
    • Start with "grml noapic nopcmcia"
  2. Acer Aspire 1510
    • setpci -s 0:a.0 SUBORDINATE_BUS=0A [Marcel Wichern]
  3. Acer TravelMate290
    • Start with '/boot/isolinux/linux26'
  4. Compaq DL380 G1
    • Start with "grml nodma"
  5. Dell Inspiron 510m
    • Starts with 'grml video=ofonly' or nofb
  6. Dell inspiron 3200, and Dell OptiPlex GX1p
    • Starts with 'grml nodma ide=nodma'
  7. Thinkpads with 3COM NICs
    • Start with 'grml acpi=off'
  8. Thinkpad X31
    • Does not seem to be able to boot from USB-FD.
  9. Thinkpad L512 with Thinkpad b/g/n wireless adapter
    • The wireless adapter is a Realtek 8191 and did not work with 2.6.36 nor with 2.6.38 (wireless device did not show up)
  10. Toshiba Tecra S1
    • Does not support booting from USB-stick
  11. Toshiba Portege M100 / Portege R600
    • Boots only with 'grml edd=off'
  12. Fujitsu Siemens P and S Series Lifebook
    • Boots only without 'vga=791'

Hardware Components

  1. Older AMD-CPU based systems (Athlon) do not boot with grml_2009.10, grml_2009.05 works.
  2. Intel 945 Chipset
    • Disable Sound in BIOS to enable intel e1000 network
  3. Intel 965 chipset
    • Boot using 'grml all-generic-ide pci=nommconf irqpoll' if you notice any problems with booting.
  4. Realtek ALC882 HDA soundcard
    • Basically works out of the box, but there are a few issues. Add the line 'options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1' to /etc/modprobe.d/sound
  5. S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR
    • Starts only with "grml nofb"

  1. Lenovo Thinkpad T400
    • For WiFi you need a recent kernel (>=2.6.27)
    • On models with switchable graphics the vesa mode of X might not work when the ATI card is active. Use module "ati" in your X config.
