Run Windows apps and games on macOS — no scripts, no Terminal, just download and go.
Crosswire is a maintained fork of Whisky, updated to use Gcenx's actively maintained Wine builds instead of the original archived source.
- Whisky (the upstream project) was archived in April 2025
- wine-stable on Homebrew is deprecated (disabled Sept 2026)
- CrossOver costs $74
- Crosswire is free, open source, and actively maintained
Double-click the DMG, drag Crosswire to Applications. That's it.
- macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later
- Apple Silicon (M1 or later) — Intel support coming
- Open Crosswire
- Click + to create a new bottle
- Click Install Software and select your Windows
.exe - Launch it from the Programs list
Crosswire needs an Apple Developer account ($99/year) to distribute signed, notarized builds.
Built on the shoulders of:
- Whisky by Isaac Marovitz — the original GUI
- Gcenx/macOS_Wine_builds — actively maintained Wine for macOS
- Wine — the core compatibility layer
- CodeWeavers — primary Wine contributor
