Right now, the RenderEngine has some methods that set a certain rendering hint, while others don't. We need to properly specify the desired behavior here and streamline the implementation.

RenderingHints.KEY_TEXT_ANTIALIASING

VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_OFF (default)
VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_ON

RenderingHints.KEY_TEXT_LCD_CONTRAST
VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_LCD_HRGB
...

This affects only direct text rendering on the Graphics2D object.

Good default values for the text rendering hints can be retrieved by:

g.setRenderingHints((Map<?, ?)Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getDesktopProperty("awt.font.desktophints"));
