Installation

Prerequisites:

  • Java
    • Java 7+ (for gwen-web 1.x)
    • Java 8+ (for gwen-web 2.x)
  • Web browser (Chrome, Firefox, IE, or Safari)

To install the Gwen Web engine, follow the instructions in one of the following methods:

Installing a Binary Release

Create a Workspace

A Gwen Workspace will self install and configure Gwen to execute consistently on any user workstation or build server. This method is ideal for web automation teams wanting to share their work with each other in Git and who need an easy way to execute their Gwen suite on any machine and target different environments.

  • Download the latest gwen-workspace.zip
  • Extract the zip file into a directory
  • Open a terminal session in extracted directory
  • Run the following command(s) to install:
    • Mac/Linux:
      • chmod -R u+x gwen*
      • ./gwen -b
    • Windows:
      • gwen -b
  • Start using Gwen

OR..

Install it using the Gwen package manager

  1. Install the Gwen Package Manager (gwen-gpm) if you do not already have it installed
  2. Open a command prompt and run the command below.

Replace <destinationDir> with the directory location where you would like Gwen Web to be installed to or omit it if you want to install it to the default location at ~/.gwen/packages/gwen-web under your user home. If you don't want to install the latest version, you can change the latest literal to the version that you do want to install.

    • gwen-gpm install gwen-web latest <destinationDir>
  3. Configure your target browser and web driver as described in runtime settings
  4. You are now ready to start using Gwen

OR..

Install it manually yourself

Perform the following to manually download and install the latest binary build:

  1. Download the gwen-web zip file from the latest release page
  2. Extract the zip to a desired location on your local drive. This will create a gwen-web-[version] folder in your unpacked location
    • If you are on a Unix platform, open a command prompt and execute the following command inside the unpacked gwen-web-[version] folder to make it executable:
      • chmod -R u+x gwen*
  3. Download and install the latest Java (JRE) if you do not already have it installed.
    • You can verify that you have an installation by opening a command prompt and typing java -version.
      • gwen-web v2.x will require Java 8
      • gwen-web v1.x will require Java 7+
  4. Configure your target browser and web driver as described in runtime settings
  5. You are now ready to start using Gwen
  • Open a command prompt to your extracted gwen-web-[version] folder and type the following command to launch Gwen:
    • Windows: gwen
    • Unix: ./gwen
  • The REPL console will start.
   __ ___ _____ _ __ _
