regex searches extremely slow on files with very long lines

Commit d1fe3e1 introduced an extreme slowdown of regex searches on files with very long lines.

Searches on files with very long lines now last HOURS. Before this commit, same search on same file lasted less than one second.

During search, ^C and ^Z are not working.

I think this is a duplicate of #370. Do you still see the problem in less-656?
