R.I.P. Hot pink text-selection highlight

Replace hot pink with a more neutral selection background color: the
default found on OS X.

A number of high-profile sites have failed to customize the hot pink
default that HTML5 Boilerplate used to include. People should be able to
trust the project to include sensible defaults. Keeping hot pink in
there by default breaks the "no surprises" expectation of amateur and
professional developers.

Honestly I don't think it could ever be inappropiate. But if it hurts the project, that definitely sucks.

The pink selection background color fulfilled the purpose of the selection background color extremely well—it made the selection stand out. As I pointed out once before when this was brought up, i) the Financial Times newspaper of London switched to a shade of pink in 1893 to differentiate itself from a rival (that it later merged with in 1945), and has retained the color to this day, becoming an international newspaper (on a rather serious subject matter I might add); also ii) there are a number of "serious" sites on the web that use shades of pink as a main element of their designs.

The sheer popularity of the project would also appear to indicate that the selection background color hasn't hurt the project in any meaningful way.

As far as "keeping hot pink in there by default breaks the 'no surprises' expectation of amateur and professional developers", Professional developers should only i) have the expectation that the software performs as outlined in the documentation and source code, and ii) test it anyway. As for amateurs, having them be responsible enough to change the background selection color if they don't like it isn't expecting too much: an amateur house painter should be responsible enough to read the directions on the paint they buy, and pay particular attention to the color.

At the same time, its whatever dude. I'll just make the two tiny changes to add hot pink back in where appropriate and it will take all of half a second. Hot Pank Reprazent.

Keep the Pink. Pink has balls. Sex appeal anyway. Don't dumb down your code to the lowest common denominator. Failing to notice the color is a learning opportunity - why would you deprive developers of a learning opportunity - isn't knowledge more important than making developers or clients comfortable? What is the value of comfortable? Easy? Obvious? Politically "neutral"? Pink reminds us of the developers who dug the well. They are human. The developers who dug the well bring their humanity to development. They dug the pink. Respect that. Well-diggers like Paul Irish. Fuck corporate sites that don't get it. Let the joke be on them. It's fun. We all can use a little extra fun - right? Keep the pink. Why is this color incorrect? Because the committee determined that "a more neutral color" is more appropriate? There is no such thing as a "neutral" color. There is such a thing as a neutered boilerplate. Gutless. Cheap. I challenge you to have some courage. Stop wearing blue or white shirts to work everyday. Ask for a raise. Hold websites for ransom. Make sure you get that last payment. Take some time to try to understand someone who is a little different than yourself. Pink is not random. Pink was picked. Pink has meaning. Pink is content. Content first. Pink is meaningful content programed into the very DNA of the CSS display layer. Pink brands the boilerplate and says "thank you". Pink is subversive. Pink screams for attention. Pink surprises and delights the user. Wakes us up. Shocks us. Shouts. Pink has personality. Pink reminds us that we are entitled to have a personality; to express our personality, to incorporate our personality into our work and value it as part of the package, part of what the client is paying for. Pink burn our hearts with grief. Pink reminds us to be grateful for the help we got. Pink reminds us that we are not doing it alone. Pink reminds us to give back. To teach. Pink reminds us of the dead. Pink rebels against silence. Pink rebels against inchoate neutral mute. Pink is OK with imperfection. Pink is so wrong that it is so right. Keep the pink.

I think of all the people (myself included) that learned what ::selection because of the hot pink. The first time I saw the hot pink background, I had to figure out where that was being defined. I dug into the css and learned something new. Without the pink, there will be many "entry level" devs that will skip over this property, use the default, and never learn about ::selection. :(

@tonyjcamp Same here! But I did always end up changing it.

It will be missed, but to be honest, I agree with the decision.

While the person who left hot pink on abcnews.com may be upset, they are now a more knowledgeable and better developer because of it. Plus, why not save a few bits and remove it altogether if you want to be conservative?

I'm offended that anyone would want to contribute something useful.

Also, I'm going to punch a random stranger in the back of the head tomorrow and yell "that's for hot pink!"

Based on this I'm happy to have immortalized hot pink in print:

Why not change it to something that is professional, and yet still stands out (such as neon green?). I don't really expect devs to pour over every single line of code the put in their project, otherwise why would they use someone else's code? But it still is something that would be awesome to make you stand out.

If I saw that my selection colour was not what I wanted it to me, I'd probably do a "Find in files" for "selection" and find it pretty quick. A dev who uses others' code and can't find something like that... not cool! I think taking the time to familiarise yourself as best you can is a good thing.

And I think I missed the "neon green is professional" party. ;)

@ProLoser What?! This is no Mac vs PC argument! I'm merely mentioning that presumably the default colour should be the native colour of the platform with the most marketshare. Oh well, I suppose it's not too important :-S

(Also I'm saddened that you found the need to be so offensive in response to a post that was perfectly civil).

@Dotty Oh man, you're right, I think the community has completely overlooked this... h5bp should focus fully on IE8 and degrade gracefully in other browsers, since it has the largest market share... time for some VML magic! ...sense the sarcasm, of course ;)

Market share is misconstrued when you apply it this way. H5BP, as a platform, serves developers; developers, in turn, serve clients (or projects); h5bp is not concerned with the end-clients. A good framework makes good assumptions that appease the developer-client interaction, but making assumptions on client requirements (market share - target audience) is out of scope. That said, I'm only providing a vague outlook here... hopefully I'm not in my own little world on this one. :P

@Aaunel There's no standard for the select colour, however, so - in the absence of a standard - it's arguably best to go with the largest marketshare. But I agree with your comments somewhat - what I put was just a little throwaway comment that people seemed to get angry about for some reason. As I put in my last comment, it really isn't too important :-)
