Might be too early for this but..

@-ms-viewport { width: device-width; }

.. looks necessary, according to http://hammerspace.co.uk/2012/04/responsive-design-in-internet-explorer-10-windows-8

Maybe this bug can be reported before IE10 ships, because the behaviour looks far from optimal and it's going to affect many existing sites.

True. Either we get Microsoft to support

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" />

like everyone else, or all sites are going to need to add this @-ms-viewport property

cc @miketaylr as @Viewport is Opera's awesome idea that looks to be a compatibility nightmare. :/

Well, the @viewport is the way things are going...but is it right that IE10 zooms out the web page in this situation?

Ouch... could this just be an IE10 attempt at compatibility with older sites (which always seems to be their 'approach')? In that case, it just needs to be pushed back on and perhaps suggested for compatibility view / quirks mode? Haven't had a chance to get my hands on the consumer preview yet...

Closing coz: IE10 hasn't shipped; hopefully someone is telling Microsoft that this behaviour needs to be reassessed before they do ship it.

Actually, for those who don’t mind logging in, please make sure to click the “I can too” link below “User(s) can reproduce this bug”. That gives it a higher priority — it’s the Microsoft equivalent of Bugzilla’s “vote for a bug” or Google Code’s “star this issue”.

Update on this: The IE blog has just released an article about dealing with the zoom feature: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2012/06/19/adapting-your-site-to-different-window-sizes.aspx
Therefore it seems very unlikely they will be changing this behaviour. I have tested in the release preview and it is still there.

@Hammerspace hm, surprised if they'd be reducing support for older sites, since previously most IE issues have arisen from backward-compatibility, more than anything (imo?)... but, that does look like a probable issue going forward :(

might need some more votes @mathiasbynens ;)

[sigh] Incompatibility with existing "responsive" sites is surely reason enough to reassess this...unless I'm missing something.

Maybe they don't consider it broken as it simply shows the full 1024px version of the site and offers pinch zoom capabilities - though I wonder if user-scalable=0 prevents pinch zoom.

Should this really be reopened ...

Since IE10 is in Release Preview and they're actively recommending developers use this, yeah.

Just a heads up to help click "I can too" - you have to sign in and register with MS Connect before you can access this bug. Signing in is not sufficient to report.

That seems like a separate issue to the report that their browser doesn't disable automatic scaling for existing websites if the meta viewport is set to device-width or other. Surely IE10 should play nice with existing responsive sites, even if using CSS viewport can override it or provide more specific adaptations.

Another update on this:

MS closed the ticket insisting it is not a bug. Seems this feature is coming in IE10 whether we like it or not.

"Thank you for your feedback.

The behavior observed is the default for the Metro style browser. We've selected this as the default behavior since it provides the best result on the widest set of websites on the web today. In IE10, we've added support for W3C CSS Device Adaptation [1] which can be used by site developers with adaptive layouts to get the layout they desire.

A more detailed explanation of the feature and its use is available on the IEBlog [2].

The Internet Explorer Team"

Anyone with this developer preview can make some tests and assure that it works reasonably well? I have access on a desktop machine, but not the phone.

I pinged the IE team about this and they're focusing on the standards-based CSS implementation defined in the following W3C spec: http://www.w3.org/TR/css-device-adapt/.

@irae if you need help testing, send me the test cases and I'll work to get them verified.

@paulirish @necolas Would this be best placed in BP or Normalize?

For now, I'd say BP, but we I'm tracking an issue on Normalize to maximize research / feedback.
