You can do %strong> or %strong< or %strong><, but it is impossible to remove whitespace JUST before or JUST after an inline element.

See this gist for the code samples: https://gist.github.com/3210444

The only possible outputs are as follows:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet "Bold" more lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"Bold"more lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet "Bold" more lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"Bold"more lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

It would be nice to have a way to control just the before or after whitespace, for example:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet "Bold"more lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

OR

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"Bold" more lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

I think In these cases the simplest thing is just to mix a little bit of HTML inside your content, or use Markdown. The whitespace control operators arn't really intended to be used with mixed content and tags.
