With very last version of chosen.jquery.js 0.9.8 (May 2, 2012)
After triggering the liszt:updated event by line:

$("#chzn-select").val(value).trigger("liszt:updated");

I get the error:

this.selected_item is undefined in chosen.jquery.js

lline 698: this.selected_item.find("span").text(this.default_text);

@PremAnup Can you share a jsFiddle or a link to a demo page of some kind? Also: what browser are you using?

@PremAnup

Patrick, this bug was reproduced here http://jsfiddle.net/AeqNw/8/ Firefox 12.0, Firebug 1.9.1. Run, select any 2 options, then take a look in console messages.

@pfiller pfiller Only clean up the deselect trigger for single selects (and don't call…
… the rest of results_reset)

Thanks @PremAnup. I believe this is now fixed in b028f9e. Please pull the latest and re-open if you're seeing the problem still.
