Unfortunately this won't work because Vagrant doesn't have access to the chef rubygem when installed using the package installers (which is the preferred way). This works if Vagrant is installed via RubyGems and chef is also installed.

I'd love to have this sort of feature added as well but unfortunately relying on chef gem is not a solution.

One possible alternate solution is to shell out to knife. That would work.
