When I start up the application, it behaves very poorly, as I encounter the following issues:
First the application freezes for about 10s, with the UI totally unresponsive.
Secondly, I have two servers set to autoconnect, Freenode and irc.mozilla.org . I connect to both of these via SSL. Connecting to these at startup fails, with a SSL handshake timed out, approximately 90s after startup.
If I close out one of these servers during this 80s before the timeout where the UI does respond, and then connect to another, Hexchat will use my autojoin settings for the server that was at the same position in my server list at startup, instead of the server I connect to.
For example, my default connections are to:
* freenode: #archlinux
* irc.mozilla.org: #rust, #rust-gamedev, #rust-wasm
If I close out the irc.mozilla.org server, and connect to OFTC instead during this 90s...
OFTC replaces freenode as the first server in my list
And on completion, I autojoin #archlinux on OTFC, despite not having #archlinux on my OFTC autojoin list.

I did some more investigation on this. The freezes and failed connections appear to be at least caused by the absence of any notification daemon running on my setup. I manually checked out the latest code and built it (currently 9201462) , and it still had the issue.
However, in doing so, I spotted the following message at the command line after the application resumed:
(hexchat:7672): libnotify-WARNING **: 21:14:10.759: Failed to connect to proxy
Investigating why libnotify needed a proxy led me to realise it isn't actually anything to do with network proxies, and I had no notification daemon set up on my system. After installing one, the freezes on startup went away.
