Got a nearly fresh install of Windows 8, just updates and some other software, and both 2.9.4 and 2.9.5a1 fail to start, they just leave a process running in the behind. Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. I tried without plugins too and no help.
EDIT: I may add that the 32-bit version of 2.9.4 doesn't work either

Do you have a non-ASCII character in your Windows username? (See #295 (comment))
Hello, I too am having this same problem: Both 2.9.4 and 2.9.5a in both x86 and x64 will fail to start after installation. Some further details:
I'm on Windows 8 Pro 64-bit as well, fresh install
No non-ASCII characters in my username
No AppData folder
When starting HexChat the process starts with 25% cpu being used (on a modern i5 cpu). Have to kill it manually, though I've waited for it to finish and it never does.
I am very keen on hearing any ideas to troubleshoot this problem. HexChat was working fine in Windows 7.
@byte- Are you using a Microsoft account to log in? If so, can you try to install Hexchat on a local account?
I neither have non-ASCII characters, and there is no AppData folder created. Uses around 25% on an i3 too and I can spawn as many processes as I want, but I need to kill them all. I am using a Microsoft Account to log in, will test out a local account and edit this with the results.
EDIT: Okay it's more strange. Local account works, runs totally fine with the regular install. Weird part is after I logged out of the local one, and then logged in to my Microsoft one it worked there too... :) Only had time for a quick test will try to replicate or do a fresh install with Microsoft account now, but this happened with 2.9.5a1
EDIT2: I cannot reproduce the issue again, something must have gone right with the local account install that now allows me to even have a working HexChat installed from the Microsoft account. I will not close this issue since byte- could still have problems and if you have any questions or debug information that you desire please ask, I will keep an eye on this issue.
Well, creating another account caused some very bad issues at log in screen that I could only resolve by reinstalling. Suffice it to say it was likely my system that was the problem, not hexchat--it is working again, on a Microsoft account.
Have the same problem. Fresh Win8 Pro x64 install. HexChat fails to start. Tried bot 2.9.4 and 2.9.5a x86 and x64.
With the same problem (process using 25% but nothing is happening). Tried to the the local account workaround but this didn't help. Installed HexChat from a local account with the same results.
I don't think it's a problem with missing dlls since HexChat starts but the process seems to do nothing
Same as issue 295 from 2 months ago. I have win8 64 bit too. Shows as a background service not as an app. can not view the program's window.
