…h (not much we can do in this case b/c Travis-CI seems to do some weird terminal dynamism, perhaps could try installing and opening a different terminal in which to run?

Doing actual tty testing on Travis will probably be largely hopeless; Travis will probably only be good for unit tests. Might have to set up own environment (GitLab or something) for functional testing.
