Having an OpenSearch description document allows some software (e.g. Firefox) to automatically pick up on search features on a page.

Specification appears to be this:

Example minimal description document:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<OpenSearchDescription xmlns="">
  <Url type="text/html" template="{searchTerms}"/>

And this snippet in the HTML to reference it:

<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml"
 href="/opensearchdescription" title="">
