Hi. Kudos on what looks like a really beautiful and enticing product in the Aesop Story Engine. I installed the Wordpress plugin today, and thought you would want to know it makes my post and page editing inoperative. When I click on "Edit Post," it gives me a white screen. I can go back to the dashboard just fine with my browser's "back button." It didn't seem to mess with my existing pages on the front end. I thought at first it might be a conflict with another plugin, but I tried deactivating all my other plugins on the site and ran it with only the Aesop Story Engine plugin activated, and got the same issue. I'm wondering if it's because I use a Genesis child theme (Dynamik).

It does appear to be a theme-related conflict. As a test, I activated the Twenty-Thirteen theme, and the plugin worked as expected.

Hey there! What do your logs say? White screen is deffo php error of some sort. I'll have some others test this on Genesis to see if they can't replicate it.

Thanks for reporting this!

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm in just slightly over my head, so bear
with me. :-)

This is the only error I see that seems to be related to Aesop:

[07-Jan-2014 00:10:12 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Class name must be a valid
object or a string in
/home3/cometban/public_html/wp-content/plugins/aesop-core-dev/admin/includes/custom-meta-boxes/class.cmb-meta-box.php
on line 82

Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problem with the latest version. Using version 0.9.8, I get a white screen when I try to edit a page or post. In my error logs, I'm seeing the following fatal PHP error:

[31-Jan-2014 16:05:07 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Class name must be a valid object or a string in /home3/cometban/public_html/wp-content/plugins/aesop-core-master/admin/includes/custom-meta-boxes/class.cmb-meta-box.php on line 82

This fix is in dev branch. Can you test dev branch?

Okay. I uninstalled Aesop, then installed the dev download. Still getting the white screen, and getting the same PHP error:

[31-Jan-2014 16:16:12 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Class name must be a valid object or a string in /home3/cometban/public_html/wp-content/plugins/aesop-core-dev/admin/includes/custom-meta-boxes/class.cmb-meta-box.php on line 82

Forgive my noobiness, but where would I find that? Looking at my PHPMyAdmin control panel, it says version 3.4.11.1. Does that look like the number you're looking for?

Please let us know what the up-shot is when you can. I really like Dynamik, but dammit, I can see a lot of uses for Aesop and really want to play! :-)

Just updating this thread with info from the thread above:

I see exactly what is going on here.

We use the fork, of Custom Metaboxes, which is vastly improved with a lot more features such as repeatable, drag/drop fields.
https://github.com/humanmade/Custom-Meta-Boxes

Dynamik is using the original version
https://github.com/WebDevStudios/Custom-Metaboxes-and-Fields-for-WordPress

Those 2 forks are not compatible with each other. The only way this will be solved is if one of us removes the library. I can say that this is something we're looking into in a future version, solely for the purpose of cutting down weight and optimizing.

I am using Dynamik for Genesis, and have just found your incredible looking plugin only today. All I can say is WOW, really stunning work on this plugin. It is a shame it is having issues with Dynamik as this is the only platform that we use for all projects for the shear power of it.

@bearded-avenger Was a copy of Dynamik sent to you? If not I will send one right away. Is Eric Hamm from Cobalt Apps aware of this? If notI will send him a link to this thread.

@bearded-avenger I'm the developer of Dynamik and will be pushing out a new version soon. I'm happy to make changes to resolve this. Any thoughts on the least intrusive way to fix this?

@cmwwebfx thanks for pulling in @cobaltapps

@cobaltapps thanks for reaching out. Let's see if we can't solve this for these guys eh?

Look like our options may be limited to;

  • making the two libs work without errors
  • one of us ditching the lib we're using

The latter isn't really feasible, at least for me, yet. This is planned but not in the immediate future.

The question is, could one of us rename some classes to solve this, and also do so without "breaking" things. I have several variables involved here with regard to how it's implemented and I haven't looked into how a change like this might affect Dynamik, but I'm willing to consider all options.

Aesop Story Engine 1.0.6 appears to have fixed this issue.
