It's been requested by several users that it would be great if instead of downloading comics straight to the device in advance, they could be 'streamed', whether from a local device on the network, or an online service.

Methods include:

  • Having collections 'map' to a folder on an external drive, and only comics in the immediate vicinity of the user's reading progress are downloaded. All other ones are deleted from the device, but they're still visible in the collection (And will download on cue).
  • Using a tool such as ComicStreamer to manage/index comic data on a remote device, and serve content on demand through a REST API.

Mapping to online drives sounds very easy to do, purely from iComics itself, but the downside would be there would be no thumbnails for the comics locally.

ComicStreamer would vastly improve the experience in being able to generate and supply meta data on the server itself, but obviously brings the additional overhead of users needing to set up a separate app that regulates their comic collection.

Another potential protocol is OPDS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OPDS
